Our Mission

The Mission of MARS-HALL.TV
is to share our Texian Culture.

Seven Flags have flown over Marshall, Texas. Each has contributed to our heritage and our present culture. Marshall is a mosaic of many cultures and today we are something unique.

There is an old adage that says "what would the martians think if they came to earth and saw this."At Mars Hall the Martians do come to earth.  As you will learn they are among us.  They visit often.

The ersatz purpose of Mars Hall is to educate Martians preparing to visit here.  At Mars Hall martians learn about the culture, morays and paractices of the indigenous inhabitants.  That would be us.  By watching MARS-HALL.TV martians prepare to blend into our every day lives.  You may be able to notice some of these martians, but they picked a great place to visit, because frankly, most of the people here could be from Mars.

The Historical  Harrison County Courthouse restoration has reached a major milestone.  Now in its 2nd Century, the landmark appears as it did in 1901. A re-dedicatioin ceremony was held to hearld this historic acheievement.  Dignitaries and Martians alike where on hand to get the first look at the inside of this magical example of the "Gilded Age".

It is no accident that the dedication occured one day before the Equinox.  As Mars Hall fans know, at midnight on the day of the equinox, the transporter located in the basement of the Courthouse, (MARS HALL) is at max capacity.  Many Martians are coming to see the finished work. By the time they got back home to Finland on Tuesday, this video was waiting for them. We only wish we could have been there when they t\watched themselves ONLINE for the first time.

DVD Album Notes by Will Avery

I heard Dani Stromback in front of the Weisman Center on this first visit to Marshall. Ever since that night I have been telling peiople in Marshall that the best night I ever spent in Downtown was the night that jazz guy from Nore\way was here. It was magical, but I was wrong, Dani is from Finland.

This was my first time to hear FX The Band. I was blown away. There is something so refreshing and unique about this group that I will spend the rest of the albumnotes trying to describe the affect they have on me. But all you really have to do is watch the videos. Then you can join me in my inability to put in words, the enchantment that is FX - The Band.

There are 6 Video's Click on the Description to view the video:

1. The opening title is built on the flag sent by the Mayor of Dani Strombacks home town in Finaland. The music opens with a shimiring glimpse of the sound paintings to come, then lauches into a straight forward Jazz Tune by Charlie Parker. FX definely makes the case that they are a band that speaks the Jazz Idiom. Every thing is in cruise control until Marcus Sonderstrom plays a Bass Solo that hints of future tunes. The song ends with Janne Hyoty playing the guitar as if it were some other instrument. The second number on this Cut is another straight aghead jazz piece. DaniStromback demontrates that he is familiar with the American Jazz Keyboard history by alluding to them as little side jaunts during his solos. The group takes a round of solos and yes that is a US Mail Box behind the Bass Solo. Patrick Lax shows us that he is a precussionist, not a drummer. Time 11:47

2. This Cut starts with Dani introducing FX to the crowd. They start the set with an original version of a Modonna Tune. They make full use of the sound palate and create a shimmering backdrop that gives way to a statement by Janne that only he could make. He can tease sounds from a guitar that make you wonder if he has a bow instead of a pick. The timbre is so unique that it must be Finnish. The second song they lauch into a Jazz Waltz that is both rythmic and lyrical. This group plays with melodic lines that show their maturity and savvy. Although they all have chops to die for, their technique serves the music not the other way around. Time 12:23

3. Another Charlie Parker tune starts off this set with Dani stating the theme and passing out a few variations for the consideration of the other players. Then Janne starts out sounding like a Gibson Hallow Body in true classic jazz style. Even his ad lib playing seems to always be going somewhere. The musical lines are long arching journies. When it is his turn, Marcus shows that he can not only drive a band, he can dance with the best. He is solo is smooth and complete. The group trades fours with Marcus while our camera man tries to keep up with them. and they return to the theme to close. Now for what you have been waiting for, a slow day dreamy walk through "Noregian Woods". This is where FX shines with the tonal colors that only they can make. Time 9:25

4. Janne opens with a solo rendition that would make any guitar player proud. It is so Bluesy in spots that you have to think of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Again the musical thoughts have wide melodic arcs. The piece ends with a sound mirage. For the second number FX returns to Jazz History and Charlie Parkers "Scrapple from the Apple". A unison statement of the theme by Bass, Guitar and Piano seems effortless. Patrick gives it an almost Bossa Nova rythmn at times. A little boy who has both a piano and drum set accourding to his mom gets stuck like a magnet on Dani and Janne. A round of rides taken by everyone ends with the theme this time with embellishments of the unison playing. Time 12:41

5. Contemprary and new jazz just flows from FX on this one. Dani's solo has a aire of hip sophistication and amazing tonal qualities. The he provides a background for a display of technique and runs that roll off of Janne's fingers. Fast unison runs from piano and guitar melt into tonal painting and chord exploration that ends in chiming and ringing sounds you want to hear again. Next another contemporary flight takes off with speed and direction. Dani is searing hot with a solo that displays his thourogh knowledge of chords and some cool licks and riffs. Not to be outdone, Janne lauches into the stratosphere wtih abandon. Patrick and Marcus provide a pulsing drive that breaks down into a Bass Solo and Percussion Clinic on snare drum and cymbal technique. A bonus third song in this set is "Softly as a Morning Sunrise". The way FX just tosses off the end of each main theme phrase with a little behind the beat unison phrase is just way cool. Time 17:25

6. We saved the best for last, beginning with a Swedish Folk Song done in FX style. You will find yourself hearing this catching little melody in your head. "You Were Always on My Mind" has been recorded by Willie and everyone else. This renditiion is unique. Janne playes Slide Guitar and some times sounds like a Steel Guitar. He coaxes sounds that are friendly reminders of the past and explores new textures that are refreshing to hear. This group from Finland sounds right at home in Texas wtih this one. The crowd starts dancing in the space in front of the stage. For their last number, FX takes us to that tonal garden only they can visit. It is a sweet sad good night and farewell to a magic evening in DOWNTOWN MARSHALL TEXAS. FX, please come back soon. Time : 16:17
